SHAHADAT-E-Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.)

The martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.) and his family members on the land of Karbala has been a great source of inspiration for all the people who fight for the cause of freeing mankind from the clutches of despots and chains of slavery.

This incident happened on Muharram 10,61A.H. The tragic incident owed its origin in the termination of Khalafat, Islamic democratic rule and the beginning of kingship by Hazrat Amir Mawiya (RA) and Yazid was the son of Hazrat Mawiya (RA) and his successor who occupied the kingship after the death of his father though he was lacking all the pre-requisite qualities and qualification, character and magnanimity to become successor of his father.

The appointment of Yazid as king evoked a wide spread resentment from all quarters his kingship was against the spirit of Islamic democracy. Earlier none of the four caliphs: Hazrat Abu Bakr Sidiq (R.A), Hazrat Umar Farooq, Hazrat Usman and Hazrat Ali nominate themselves as Amir-ul-Momini, but these caliphs and high ranking companions of prophet Muhammad (SAW) were elected by the people themselves, governing the democratic foundation of the state. Hazrat Amir Mawiya held reigns of Islamic kingdom after Hazrat Hussain (RA) withdrew his claim on the Khalafat following an agreement with him that he would follow the principles of four calips and after that it is the unchallengeable right of Ummah to decide on it. Hazrat Hassan (RA) did so with all candour and sincerity to preclude.

The possibility of mutual conflict and bloodshed between Muslims and paved way for Muslims to server Islam and spread it in the rest of world. He knew that Anti-Islamic elements had already hatched conspiracies and intrigues during the Khalafat of Hazrat Usman (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA), the Muslims engaged themselves in mutual feud, which in consequence led to the martyrdom of Hazrat Usman (RA). The ill-element who hatched a conspiracy and raised unnecessary questions was Abdullah Ibn Sabah and thereby created quos and confusions among Muslim. Hazrat Usman (RA) did every possible effort to remove these confusions, but Abdullah Ibn Sabah and his followers led. Hazrat Usman (RA) to martyrdom and two formidable battles Jamble and Safeen, in which a number of Muslims including some high ranking companions of prophet Mohammad (SAW) were Slain which also led to martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA). After the death of Hazrat Mawiya (RA), Yazid occupied the kingship but these were revolts and revulsions against him. Yazid employed all methods of coercion and suppression to quell simmering revolt. After Amir Mawiya (RA), the people of Madian wanted to elect any of the four companied of Muhammad (SWA): Hazrat Hussain Bin Ali (RA); Hazrat Abdullah Bin Umar (RA); Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abass (RA) and Hazrat Abdullah Bin Zubair (RA) as Amir-ul-Mumineen as a result of which Yazid looked upon these companions of prophet a potential threat to his despotic and self-styled rule. So immediately after assuming the reigns of power, Yazid sent decree to the governor of Madian to ask these companions of prophet (SAW) to extend oath of allegiance to him and in case they refuse, subject them to persecution, troubles and torture. As a result of it, these companions of prophet left Madina for Makah. After some days the grandson of prophet Muhammad (SAW), Hazrat Imam Hussain Bin Ali (RA), received a myriad of letters from Kofa (Iraq) offering allegiance to him and inviting him to visit Kofa to overthrow the despotic rule of Yazid.

On seeing Kofias sending letters to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the people Makah cautioned him against the duplicity of Kofians. It was a proverb regarding Kofians “Al Kofi La Yufee”. But when letters poured in a large number, Hazrat Imam Hussain sought a send counsel of the companions of prophet Muhammad (SAW) and finally it was decided that Hazrat Muslim Bin Akeel (RA) may be sent to Kofa to have direct fell of situation. Hazrat Akeel (RA) left for Kofa along with his two minor sons namely Muhammad and Ibrahim and was satisfied by the overwhelming support of people who assured him of their allegiance to Hazrat Hussain (RA). He wrote to Hazrat Hussain (RA) to come to Kofa as the situation demanded so. Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) left for Kofa along with his other family members and in all he craven comprised 72 members including women and children. But on the way to Kofa Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) was informed by the people about the martyrdom of Hazrat Muslim Bin Akeel (RA) and his two minor sons and urged him not to march onwards as the changing mood of the people of Kofa due to Yazid’s Army. But Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) refused to go back by saying it would amount to rubbing salt on the wound of Hazrat Akel’s (RA) daughter who too was accompanying the carven-e-Hussain (RA).

The Carvan reached Karbala where baring few women and children, all members of prophet’s (SAW) family achieved martyrdom while fighting the Yazid’s army who had laid siege f the carvan and the river furat. When these few survivors reached Makah, thousands of Muslims took a vow to average the killing of Hazrat Hussain (RA) and his family under the leadership of Hazrat Abdullah Bin Zubair (RA). Yazid and his stooges met the nemesis shortly after Karala incident. Yazid died hungry and thirsty at the age of 39, following a dreadful disease in his throat. When Yazid was on his death bed he offered throne to his son, Mawiya, who spurned it saying “I do not want a kingdom raised with the blood of prophets (SAW) family.” When Obaid Naqas, who was a prisoner, took over the governor of Kofa, his first decree was to kill all those who had participated in the battle of Karbala against Imam Hussain (RA) and his family. Ibni Ziyad, Uamr-u-Said, Shumar, Khooli and Harbin Kahil were all killed in the same way as they had martyred the Imam Hussain (RA) Hussain history is replete with the battles and wars between the followers of truth and falsehood, but what makes the battle of Karbala district is that in this battle family members of the most revered prophet Muhammad (SAW) were martyred by none others than those who also professed faith in Islam, I the poignant fact that makes every Muslim shed fears is that even the children were not allowed to drink water for three days and were martyred hungry and thirsty.

It is humane to make the animal drink before it is slaughtered. The extent of barbarity Yazid’s army, numbering in thousands at Karbala could be gauged from the fact that they disallowed the prophet’s (SAW) family members take water from river Furat to quench their thirst that was flowing near their camp. Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), who preached Islam till his last breath, who fought the Holy war being hungry and thirsty for last three days, who offered prayers amidst the shower of arrows, who prostrated God under danger, who sacrificed everything for the sake of Allah, who was worshiping peacefully even on 9th of Muharram-ul-Haram, who sacrificed his (RA) son of six months in the name of Allah.

With all this Hussain (RA) was attacking the foes like a lion. On the boldness of Harat Hussain (RA) James Karan states that he was fighting on eight sides. The army of Yazid was fighting him (RA) from all the four sides. The scorching sun was the fifth side, the burning sand particles the six one, the seventh and eighth were his thirst and hunger. No fighter in this world can excel him under these circumstances.
